Mozilla Messaging reintegrates with Labs, unifies focus on Web-based communication
Mozilla Messaging, citing Mozilla's increased focus on Web-borne communications, will be reintegrating with Mozilla Labs.The Messaging subsidiary was formed in 2008 to focus on Thunderbird, but given Mozilla Labs' current focus on identity and contact management, it now makes sense for the groups to be merged. Thunderbird will be unaffected by the change -- some URLs might change, but that's it -- and presumably Messaging's F1 and Raindrop will thrive in the Labs playground.
What this means for the end user -- for the hundreds of millions of Firefox users -- is that the next big additions will be communication- and messaging-oriented. Contacts and F1 will be almost certainly be baked into Firefox 5 or 6, both of which will be released this year -- and, who knows, there might be something else even more exciting up Mozilla Labs' sleeve!

Firefox 4 Mobile officially released for Android and Maemo devices
Moments ago, Mozilla stripped the release candidate moniker from Firefox 4 Mobile and pronounced it fit for public release. If you have a Nokia N900 phone, or a fairly-modern Android 2.0-or-later device, go ahead and install it from the Market, by using scanning the QR code after the break, or by visiting Firefox.com/m.Accompanying the release is the launch of Spark, a cute social game that's designed to fuel the adoption of Firefox 4 Mobile, much like last week's use of Glow and Twitter Party during Firefox 4 PC's release.
While the browser still feels a little rough around the edges, it's definitely worth trying out if you're still using Android's stock browser. Its JavaScript performance is significantly better than any other Android browser, and if you use Firefox on your PC, its built-in Sync functionality is awesome.
Over the next few days we'll have plenty of tips and tricks for Firefox 4 Mobile, and a list of the best add-ons available for the new browser.

Canon recalls 68,200 EOS Rebel T4i DSLRs, says rubber grips can lead to skin rash
We've covered our fair share of product recalls over the years, but this one almost certainly takes the cake when looking at pure zaniness. Canon has recalled its EOS Rebel T4i -- some 68,200 units -- "due to a risk of allergic reaction." You read that right. As the story goes, a chemical used in the camera's rubber grips "can result in a reaction that changes the grips from black to white and poses a risk of skin irritation to the consumer," and while the company has only received a single report of a consumer developing a "minor rash" after contact, that's obviously enough to issue to recall. It involves T4i units with a 12-digit serial number that contain a second digit that is a "3" or "4" and a sixth digit that is a "1." If that's you, you're advised to stop using the camera and ping Canon USA to have replacement rubber grips installed free of charge. Specifically, you can ring 855-902-3277 and be prepared to be placed on hold for the better part of your adult life.

PlayStation Plus coming to the PS Vita this year, cloud storage increasing from 150MB to 1GB 'from September'
Sony's decided that you've been playing so much with their dedicated online service, you deserve more space for your cloud saves. From next month, users will see their cloud storage increase from 150MB to 1GB. We were also teased that the PlayStation Vita would be getting into PlayStation Plus soon, but it looks like SCEE CEO Jim Ryan is holding onto that tantalizing nugget for now. Hopefully we'll hear more on this a bit later.

BattlePaint is an addictive geometric shooter game
The "baddies" are swarms of other squares, in all sorts of pretty colors. They track you all over the screen, and you run around very quickly and just shoot, shoot, and shoot some more. If that doesn't sound very emotionally deep, it's because it isn't. But it's fun!
After you shoot a baddy, it splashes paint as it disappears. You need to skate across this blob of paint and "eat it up" to get points. This game is fast. It clocked in at around 60-70 FPS on my system, and was loads of fun to play. It does tend to insult you when you die, though, but don't be offended -- I don't think it's personal.

Google Street View cams peek inside Queen Mary's staterooms
Google didn't have to head far from its Mountain View HQ to capture the 1930s golden age of British shipbuilding for Street View. The RMS Queen Mary, which personifies that era, is located conveniently down the coast from the California-based search giant at Long Beach. While it hasn't budged since the '60s, the former liner is a popular tourist attraction and has a hotel, museum and restaurants. Its Facebook page shows Google staff collecting images, and has promised that the historic site will appear on Street View "in the coming months." Until then, check the source below to see the camera-toting team prowling its oak-lined corridors.

PS Vita and PS3 cross-buy feature revealed: buy one copy, get the other free
Sony's kicked off its Gamescom event in Germany by revealing a new deal for games playable on both the PS3 and its handheld relative, the PS Vita. The incoming PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale and Ratchet & Clank: Full Frontal Assault will be two of the first titles to arrive on both -- with a single purchase giving you both versions. According to Jim Ryan, president and CEO for Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, you'll get both copies in the single package but there's no word on whether both, or one, will be digital download-only. We'll update this post when we hear more.

RIM is taking two BlackBerry 10 beta units on tour soon for carrier previews
As the world awaits the arrival of BlackBerry 10 hardware, the Wall Street Journal has a report from RIM CEO Thorsten Heins that the company is ready to start showing off the "nearly complete" devices to carriers next week. Separately, CrackBerry has heard the same from its sources, along with word that more internal employees are becoming a part of the beta test group (already plugging away since May on alpha dev units like the one shown above) as well. As RIM is preparing to ramp up production of test devices, the CEO was also ready to confirm more details about the hardware, including that two devices are due at launch -- one all-touchscreen and one QWERTY / touchscreen combo -- with plans to expand to six models evenly split between the two options, and that it will stick with removable batteries.
Before RIM tries to convince end users early next year that its new OS was worth the wait, it will have to persuade potential carrier partners. Fortunately, if you believe one unnamed WSJ source, it's already showing a "marked improvement" over existing phones that makes BlackBerry more competitive with Android. We're not sure if that will keep BBM addicts on the hook until new hardware launches, but with the roadshow about to commence we should hear more concrete details soon.

Phones4U announces the LG Optimus 4X HD, coming Aug. 27
Pre-orders start today, with Cheryl Cole tickets thrown in for good measure
Independent British retailer Phones4U has announced that it'll be launching the LG Optimus 4X HD in the UK later this month, and that it'll start taking pre-orders from today. The 4X HD is LG's international flagship for 2012, with a 4.7-inch True HD IPS display, a quad-core NVIDIA Tegra 3 CPU, running Android 4.0 and LG's new Optimus UI 3.0.
Phones4U will make the phone available from Aug. 27 on a wide range of tariffs on leading UK mobile networks. If you want a free 4X HD, you'll be able to get one on contracts starting at £26 per month. SIM-free prices aren't available just yet, but based on European prices, we can probably expect something in the £450-500 area. The black version of the phone will be offered initially, followed at a later date by the white model.
To sweeten the deal, Phones4U is also offering the first 50 pre-orderers a pair of tickets to see British singer Cheryl Cole perform live this Autumn at the LG Arena in Birmingham. P4U points out the tickets are worth £100, presumably so you know where to set your eBay starting price.
In any case, it's good to see the 4X HD getting a wider European release, following its debut in Germany a few months back. LG's definitely upped its game in the past few months, and the 4X is a phone that deserves the chance to succeed. For more, check out our initial review of the handset, linked below.
